Legislature Adjourns Sine Die

Monday, June 1st marked the last day of the legislative session. While the legislature accomplished some positive things, this session will be defined more by what didn’t happen. A procedural slow-down in the House over the voter i.d. bill killed hundreds of bills and put other major legislation at risk. By the time they adjourned, the legislature had not reauthorized the Texas Department of Transportation, the Texas Department of Insurance, and several other state agencies.

While many speculated that Gov. Perry would immediately call a special session to deal with these agencies, he determined that it was not necessary at this time.

With the session over, Gov. Perry has until Sunday, June 21st to sign bills into law, to let bills go into law without his signature, or to veto them. TIER will review all of the education-related bills that passed and make appropriate recommendations to the Governor’s office.
