Voter I.D. Bill Puts House at Stand-Still
No matter what you think about the voter i.d. bill, its mere presence on the House calendar is turning into one of the defining moments of this legislative session.
House Democrats, who strongly oppose the bill, are using parliamentary tactics to slow down the consideration of every bill. Their purpose is to make sure that the voter i.d. bill is not passed by the Tuesday night deadline.
While several attempts have been made to suspend the rules to take up bills out of their calendar order, these motions have been defeated. The resulting stalemate is putting even non-controversial measures at risk of dying.
Currently, the Senate is working to amend language from the dying bills onto related House Bills in the Senate. So, even though a bill appears dead, there is a good possibility that it will find new life as part of another bill.
Although this process is convoluted and difficult to track, we will provide updates as best we can and publish a complete summary after the session.
