Snapshot of Key Education Issues

The following is a summary of the action in each of our top policy areas. We’ve also included a chart tracking the progress of bills related to each area.

Accountability

This week, HB 3, by Representative Eissler, and SB 3, by Senator Shapiro, were unanimously approved by their respective houses on Thursday. The Senate added 8 amendments to SB 3. While many were technical corrections, the following additions were made:

  • Students will be required to complete a total of four semesters of fine arts courses in grades 6-8;
  • The TEA shall use the new rules for interventions and sanctions in the bill immediately upon the bill’s passage;
  • Application of the college-readiness standards is pushed back one year and will apply in the 2012-2013 school year; and
  • District grading policies must be based on a student’s mastery of the assignment and may not require that a student receive a set minimum grade without regard to the student’s quality of work.
