Key Education Issues
With just over 5 weeks left in the legislative session, key deadlines are rapidly approaching. Bills that haven’t been approved by a committee have little chance of becoming law. While the deadline for the House to pass House Bills is Friday, May 15th, the House Calendar will begin to back up soon. The attached bill tracking sheet shows the status of key education bills. Bills shaded in green are moving through the process, bills shaded in yellow need to start moving quickly, and bills shaded in red are likely dead.

Accountability
This week, the committee substitutes for HB 3 and SB 3 were approved by their respective committees. In addition to the original improvements made in the committee substitute, Senator Shapiro added two important committee amendments. The first includes a measure to discourage districts and schools from developing a pattern of repeatedly promoting failing students through “social promotion”. The second ensures that 4th-year CTE courses that substitute for core math and science courses are relevant and rigorous. TIER is grateful to Senator Shapiro for making these changes and strongly supports the passage of SB 3.
