Straus Elected Speaker of the House
Republican Joe Straus, III of San Antonio has been elected Speaker of the House, replacing former Speaker Tom Craddick. Straus, a third-term representative, emerged as the consensus candidate and drew support from both Republicans and Democrats. In his acceptance speech, Straus promised a more cooperative environment that he hopes will reduce partisan posturing. While committee assignments will not be made for several weeks, most observers do not believe that Straus’ election will result in widespread changes to the House education leadership.
